PERSEPHONE

PERSEPHONE

The story of Persephone is one of the most famous Greek myths. Many years ago, people who lived in what is now the country of Greece told many myths about things like weather, geography and nature. In the myth Persephone, everyone loved her because she went around plantings seeds and making sure that other plants were alive. One day, Hades, who was the god of the dead, kidnapped Persephone and took her to the underworld, where people were taken when they died. The other gods got her back, but Hades tricked Persephone so that she had to return to the underworld for three of four months each year. During that time, there was no one to take care of the plants, so they would lose their leaves and sometimes die. This is how the Greeks explained winter.
