THE
HORSE AND THE LITTLE DOG
A rich man keeps two
animals in his house. He has a little dog and a big horse. The horse has plenty
of food. He has a comfortable stable. But he works very hard. He carries wood
from the forest. He carries water from the well. He carries food from the farm.
The horse envies the little dog. The dog is always petted by his master. He is
given fine bits of food every meal.
“There goes that little dog again,” said the
Horse. “He does nothing but frisks and wags his tail. He is loved more by our
master.” The horse thought and thought. He decided he will do what the little
dog does. He hopes he will get the same love and attention the little dog gets.
That evening, the master was eating dinner. He was
seated by the dining table. The horse came running to his master. He climbed up
onto the master’s lap with his front feet. He licked his master’s face with his
tongue. The master was surprised. He
pushes the horse away.
The table broke. The dishes smashed to pieces. There was so much noise and the
helpers came running.
“Help me! Help me!” cried the master. “Take this crazy horse to the
stable.” Two helpers pulled the horse away. One man whipped and lashed him. The
horse was taken to the stable. The horse was very sad. He saw from the stable
his master and the little dog. The little dog was on his master’s lap. The
horse was in pain. He felt the lashings he received. ‘This is what I get by
acting like someoneelse. I must be myself.”
